Sadly, in 1862, he was killed. After his death, his wife, Maria Merced Williams, tried to keep the house but faced many difficulties. The property was slowly divided and eventually lost in the 1870s.

Thankfully, the story has a brighter conclusion: The John Rains House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 24, 1973.
