When people discuss where they want to spend their vacation, South Africa is rarely the first destination that springs to mind. It isn’t a typical vacation destination and because of that, not many people know about the wealth of opportunities waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.
Spa and Golf Getaway
Luxury vacation options are plentiful in South Africa. Cape Town golf courses are among the most beautiful in the country. Golfers can enjoy the iconic vistas that the area is renowned for while playing a round of golf on pristine courses at affordable rates. Many are located on the Atlantic Ocean and offer gorgeous views of the coast. The spas in the area guarantee vacationers will return home feeling well rested, pampered, and fully relaxed.
In between spa treatments and rounds of golf, there may be time to explore some of the museums in the country. The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is a testament to the struggles for equality in the area. The South African National Gallery in Cape Town is filled with art and the National Museum in Bloemfontein is home to art, cultural artifacts, and natural history specimens.
One of the more common things for travelers to associate with South Africa is a safari adventure. There is certainly a good reason for this as the area is filled with gorgeous wildlife. Tourism to natural wildlife preserves that encourage visitors to hunt with a camera rather than a gun helps to preserve the many endangered species in the area while also giving visitors the opportunity to experience the majesty of the area.
The oldest wildlife preserves in the area is the Hluhluwe Game Reserve. The preserve covers more than 200,000 acres of land and is home to all five of the big game animals which include the African elephant, black rhinoceros, Cape buffalo, African lion, and African leopard. It is highly regarded for the scope of the conservation efforts.
Exploring the Rivers of Africa
There are many ways to explore the lush rivers of South Africa. A river cruise allows visitors to safely view hippos and crocodiles from the comfort and security of their boat with an experienced guide manning the helm. This is a great option for travelers with limited experience on waterways or who want the opportunity to relax during the expedition. More adventurous vacationers may want to consider taking a kayak out for an afternoon with the crocodiles. This is definitely a higher risk option as there are always hippos and crocs hiding just below the surface with nothing but a fiberglass kayak between you.
If you want to spend time in the water but aren’t sure if a river excursion will offer enough of a thrill, the oceanic adventures may be a better fit. If you are a fan of Shark Week, you will be familiar with the cages placed in shark filled waters designed to give divers an up-close experience with great white sharks.
These dives are relatively safe, at least as safe as swimming with sharks can be. Divers don’t have to be certified to take advantage of this opportunity because the dive is not intended to be in deep water and the diver is always encased within the cage to maximize safety. However, it is still a close experience with a deadly animal and while the risk is mitigated it is not entirely removed. This can be alternatively exhilarating and terrifying.
If you are interested in extreme adventures as part of your vacation, then South Africa has a lot to offer. It is also a surprisingly relaxing location if that is what you prefer. Regardless of how you want to spend your vacation downtime, South Africa should be at the top of your list of possibilities.
