Shalechet @ The Jewish Museum in Berlin
This is a sculpture/installation called Shalechet (the Hebrew one-word term for ‘fallen’ or ‘dead leaves’) by Menashe Kadishman at the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Over 15,000 open-mouthed faces coarsely cut from heavy, circular iron plates cover the floor of a void space between the museum exhibition rooms. Their expression seems to resemble a screaming face; which is a powerful reminder of the death and suffering of fallen Jews.
The intention of this installation is to make you feel uneasy. This is achieved through the notion that you are walking over an art installation, through the high-pitch sound the masks create as you walk over them, and through the difficulty of having a firm walk along the changing topography height of the masks.
This video lets you hear the sound created as you walk over the masks. Note: Careful, the sound might be annoying.

Ooh! This is creepy!
Yeah, its kind of creepy. But that’s the intention of the artist – to make you feel uneasy… or creeped-out…
