Weekly Snapshot: Hitler’s Bunker at The Wolf’s Lair

Hitlers Bunker at the Wolf's Lair

Hitler’s Bunker – Ketrzyn, Poland

Wolf’s Lair was Adolf Hitler’s headquarters in East Prussia. Hitler spent nearly half of World War II (over 800 days) in this compound, which contains over 80 buildings including massive bunkers for high-ranking German Officials like Göring, Bormann, and Hitler, among others. It was here where decisions like the construction of the death camps and the fate of many European nations were made.  This abandoned complex is located in Ketrzyn, Poland; 4 hours north of Warsaw.

It was in January 1945 when Hitler ordered the SS troops to destroy this compound with high explosives to prevent its capture and use by the Red Army.  It was here where the last attempt to assassinate Hitler, operation Valkyrie, took place.

Hitler’s Personal Bunker (pictured above), it’s the biggest building in the complex.  Surprisingly, its exterior still stands with some noticeable cracks and damage, but its interior is completely destroyed.  Oddly this is bunker #13.

Stumbled and reviewed Norbert – will you be doing a full blog post on this place – looks fascinating!

Thanks Christian. Definitely, I have it written already. I’m currently pitching it for publication, but soon I will post it here. :)
The place is really unique and is not well known. It truly feels like you are steeping back to the WWII era and are experiencing first hand the massive destruction left by the war.

I’m sure this has to be an eerie place to visit, the thought of it gives me the shivers.

It is eerie, and in some way it feels haunting to walk between all the that massive wreckage. But still, it is an amazing place to visit.

Wow! It looks kinda scary. I wonder how it must feel being there.

I would really love to know what the energy of the place is like there. I usually find places like this where horror has occurred makes me feel very unsettled and sick. I guess not much torture was committed here just the planning of it.

Caz, the place feels gloomy and very unsettling. The secrecy behind the place, the cold materials, and the crumbling abandoned buildings create this dark image and energy that is very powerful and overwhelming. You can’t help but wonder the logic behind everything that once happened here.

True, there was no torture in this place. It was more of a strategic location for planning the war and hiding. But still, knowing that one of the worst wars this world have seen was masterminded in this place brings a horrific feeling. I also think the experience feels very authentic since the place is unspoiled and it is not visited by many tourists. I had the place all for myself (and my guide) when visited it.
