Weekly Snapshot: Dutch Clogs

Dutch Clogs – Clogs Store at Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Traditional clogs are shoes or sandals made predominantly out of wood, and are associated with the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Galicia, Lithuania, and Sweden.

Traditionally, Dutch Klompen, also know as Dutch Clogs, were used as safety shoes because they were able to withstand almost any penetration including concentrated acids and sharp objects.  They were originally used by ancient Germanic tribes who occupied modern Holland.  Today, Dutch Clogs are mostly seen as tourist souvenirs although they still remain popular among Dutch farmers and gardeners.  They are also considered to be “healthy” shoes to use.  I myself found them really uncomfortable, but I’m used to wear padded sneakers.
