Weekly Snapshot: Arenal Volcano

Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica

Arenal Volcano – La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica’s most active volcano, and one of the ten most active volcanoes in the world. The Arenal Volcano is geologically considered a young volcano and the age is estimated to be less than 7,000 years.

In fact, according to locals, people didn’t know it was a volcano until it erupted in 1968 and destroyed the small town of Tabacón.

Although the activity nowadays is not so damaging, you can still see (and hear) ash columns, underground rumbling, glowing orange lava flows and sudden explosions on a daily basis.

This volcano has an impressive size and shape. It measures at least 1,633 meters (5,358 ft) and its crater spans 140 meters (460 ft).  Its conical shape, and perfect location next to La Fortuna town, allows for impressive views of volcanic action. Almost every night the crater offers a spectacle of lights with its explosive eruptions.  To be able to have a clear view of this natural spectacle, be sure to visit during the dry season in Costa Rica, which runs from December through April.
