Poás Volcano Laguna Caliente – San Jose, Costa Rica
Poás Volcano is an active volcano situated in the Alajuela Province in San Jose, Costa Rica. This volcano is one of the most visited volcanoes in Costa Rica, because of its proximity to San Jose.
There are two crater lakes near its summit, one of the main sights of Poás Volcano National Park. The northern lake is known as the Laguna Caliente and it is situated in an active crater of approximately 1.7 km wide and 300 m deep. This blue-green crater lake is considered as one of the world’s most acidic lakes, constantly spewing boiling sulphurous gases, but in my opinion it is one of the most beautiful sights around the San Jose area.
Lake Botos, the southern lake, fills an inactive crater of roughly 2 km wide and 1000m deep. Unlike the other lake, this one contains clear cold water that connects to the Rio Angel, and later to the large Rio Sarapiqui. It is surrounded by a cloud forest located within the Poás Volcano National Park.
The best views of the crater lake are achieved early in the morning, before the afternoon rain clouds arrive.
