Weekly Snapshot: Lake Arenal

Lake Arenal, La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Lake Arenal – La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Lake Arenal is an artificial lake located in the northern highlands of Costa Rica, in the Arenal Tilaran Conservation Area.  Close to it is the Arenal Volcano and Monteverde Cloud Forest.

In 1979, it was enlarged to its present size as a part of a hydroelectric project.  The lake is approximately 30 km long and almost 5 km at its widest point, making it the largest lake in Costa Rica – covering 85 square kilometers (33 square miles).

The town of Arenal was relocated to higher ground when the lake was expanded in 1979. The old towns of Arenal and Tonadora now lie abandoned at the bottom of the lake, with the new town of Arenal located to the northeast of the lake, right next to the volcano.

    • Norbert December 6, 2010 at 6:46 pm #

Thanks! Yeah, he was paddling… sort of. I don’t think it’s something common there. I think he was just fooling around.

Very pretty shot! My sister and her husband were there a couple of years ago (and their photos weren’t nearly as nice! haha)

    • Norbert December 8, 2010 at 5:37 pm #

haha! At one point I almost got frustrated since it rained every single afternoon and night (typical in Arenal) so almost all my pictures are set in this moody weather. At least a couple came out nice. :)
