Weekly Snapshot: Gran Cenote

Gran Cenote – Tulum, Mexico

Located just outside of the city of Tulum in Mexico, the Gran Cenote is one of the most popular snorkeling and diving spots in the Riviera Maya.

The word Cenote is derived from the Mayan word “Dzonot”, which means sacred well. These wells, caves, and underground rivers were created naturally over 6,500 years ago through a combination of various geological events and climate changes that created a unique ecosystem in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

Over the past 20 years, experienced scuba divers have explored these caves discovering more than 300 miles of interconnected passageways and caves.

When you snorkel or dive in this cenote, you will be able to see the stalagmites, stalactites, and columns through the crystalline water that offers perfect visibility.

While this cenote is called Gran Cenote, it is not the biggest one in the area, but it is well worth visiting as it is beautiful and easily accessible.
