The Bow Bridge – Central Park, New York City
The Bow Bridge is one of the most famous bridges along Central Park. It is usually related to “lovers” in New York City, both in real life and reel life.
This Classical Greek refined bridge of the mid 19th century is located mid-park at 74th Street, west of Bethesda Terrace. The cast iron bridge spans 60 feet with a walkway constructed of Ipe, a South American hardwood that turns a rich deep red when wet.
It’s interesting to see how the bridges character changes as the seasons change. The colors of the Ramble woodland change in hue depending on the current season and weather. During spring, the cherry blossoms that border its ends frame the bridge in a papery pink setting. During winter, the dark naked trees make the off-white bridge stand out in scenery. And during summer, the rowboats animate the underside of the bridge as they propel gently underneath, while pedestrians cross and stare from above.
Being an iconic item in Central Park and New York in general, photographers love shooting it and from it to get “that” classic New York moment that seems to be timeless.
