Take a swim in the Devil’s Pool

Victoria Falls

If you’re looking for a unique swim, then you should take a dip at The Devil’s Pool.  This is a small lagoon, enclosed by rocks, on the edge of one of the biggest, most beautiful waterfalls in the world, Victoria Falls. The Victoria Falls or Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders) is located in southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zambia and Zimbabwe.  Now, imagine yourself swimming right at the edge of this waterfall!!  Yes, RIGHT AT THE EDGE!!

Devil’s Pool is a so-called “safe” naturally formed “swimming pool”.  During the months of September to December, due to low water levels, it is possible to swim at the edge of the falls in a naturally formed safe pool, accessed via Livingstone Island.  There you will have the opportunity to stand in shallow water, 2 inches (literally) from where the water gushes over the edge of the falls.  But don’t worry, apparently it is pretty safe.  For this reason, the falls are completely open to tourist who wish to swim at its teeter edge.

Devil' s PoolDid I mention Victoria Falls are considered some of the largest in the world?  mhmmm! The height of these impressive falls (103 meters) is more than twice the height of Niagara Falls.  …and we still want to swim near the cliff! But apparently swimming is not enough.  Most swimmers love to “daredevil” by leaning over the edge to take those amazing “I’m about to fall” pictures or to take those beautiful shots of the precipice with a permanent rainbow from the mist of the falls behind you. (Aren’t we crazy?)  Well, crazy or not, Devil’s Pool is definitely one of the most surreal spots on Earth you don’t want to miss.
