A Fireboat, a River, an Amazing Sunset

Hudson River in the Summer Afternoon

Not long ago I had the chance to go with some friends aboard the John J. Harvey Fireboat in New York.  This little boat, decommissioned in 1994 by the fire department, is not ready to go and spend the rest of its life on a ship’s cemetery as scrap.  Although its fire fighting days are over, this fireboat still preserves its life entertaining New Yorkers by giving free rides along the Hudson River.  This totally unknown NYC attraction is well worth taking.

John J. Harvey Fireboat at Manhattan

The John J. Harvey sails the Hudson and East River, among other routes, a couple times a year during the summer.  But, what is so amazing about this boat ride?  Hmmm, what kind of question is that? You are riding a true fireboat!! How many times can you say you have been aboard a fireboat?!  And not only that, but on special occasions, the boat does a water display along the Hudson and East River.  It is a long tradition to salute departing ships.  Like a blessing…

My ride on this fireboat was a unique experience.  We departed around 5:00 pm from Pier 66 and cruised the Hudson at a slow pace… no one is in a hurry right?  We passed by the Statue of Liberty, by Governor’s Island, and under the Brooklyn Bridge.  Then, after a relaxing ride came the action.  As soon as we started passing by departing ships, this old fireboat turned into a strong water machine.  Its pumps were geared at full speed and water started coming out of its hoses.  But this is not your regular garden hose.  It was like some sort of pressure machine displaying a powerful water show.  But the best thing is that you’re not just a spectator, you’re part of the show.  People from other boats and cruise ships look in awe at this water display and even start waving at you as a form of appreciation.

But we were not the only ones; there were more fireboats along the river doing the same display, as if they were river fountains.  After a few hours on the water, we were back at the pier, where we headed to eat at the restaurant set on top of a barge.  A floating restaurant?  Am I still in NY?

This has been one of the most unique afternoons I’ve spent in New York City.  It was relaxing, interesting, a good time with friends, a different view of the city, and last but not least… it was free!  Who said good things in NY have to be expensive?

I highly recommend doing this; it’s a unique way to cruise New York’s rivers without having to hop into the touristy Circle Line.  Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done Circle Line and it is good, but no one can beat a historic fireboat ride.  You’ll see that old things can still do beautiful displays.

Fact: On September 11, 2001, when the hydrants near the World Trade Center area were either destroyed or not working, the John J. Harvey –and other fireboats– provided water for 80 hours to extinguish the fire.

Fantastic photos! I love finding little things like this when I travel. While seeing the big attractions is awesome, I really like having that small experience to myself. :)

Yes, these small experiences are priceless. I have found out that New York has so many hidden gems that let you appreciate the city from a different perspective and pace. It’s the New York you don’t typically see or hear everywhere. I get really exited when I find stuff like this, for me its like discovering something completely new. :D

hahaha yes… I didn’t even know they existed before I went on that ride. When I was told “do you want to go on a Fireboat ride? I was like “a Fire-what?” lol But I’m glad I did. It turned out to be awesome!
Next time you come to New York, if it is in summer, I recommend you check their “irregular” schedule and see if you can hop-in in one of their rides. Preferably, one with a watershow… you will be amazed how strong those little boats are.
I found this picture that shows how they look like…
