With an extensive amount of long flights, bus and train rides, and blogging/working time; I’ve literally spent thousands of hours with my headphones on, listening to the latest songs or simply some of my favorite songs.
During my trip, I discovered many new songs that were either part of the identity of the place I was traveling, resembled my mood at that moment, or were simply unavoidable hits that I embraced happily from day one or had to endure for a while until I got used to them.
So, if my RTW were a movie, these would be the songs that would form the soundtrack album.
Belize – Intentalo by 3BallMTY
This was one of those songs that were a hit in Central America and that I hated passionately. That is, until I could no longer resist it since it was playing EVERYWHERE I went in Belize and Mexico. And, what’s up with those rancheros shoes in the video?!
Croatia – I Can Talk by Two Door Cinema Club
This is an older song I just happened to like when I heard it for the first time at a hostel in Dubrovnik. Since then, it’s been on my iPod playlist. I love the video!
Dubai – Chammak Challo by Akon, ft. Hamsika Iyer
In reality this is a Hindi song (with an American singing it), but I heard it for the first time doing a desert safari in Dubai, so that’s my mental picture of this song.
India – Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) by Arcade Fire
I always liked this song, but I never paid much attention to it until I arrived to India. This is pretty much what I faced from people before starting this trip, saying “Quit these pretentious things and just punch the clock”. But then in India it meant more to me when I lost my faith in humanity… “I need the darkness someone please cut the lights.” I don’t like the video that much, but the song is amazing!
Malawi – Girl Gone Wild by Madonna
I downloaded the album with the shittiest wifi you can ever imagine. Result? Most of the songs in the album were incomplete. And to top it, right after I downloaded it I went to the ATM machine (Bancomat) to get money. There was only ONE ATM Machine working so I stood in line for 1:30 hours in order to get money. That was a lot of Madonna listening…
Italy – When The Rain Is Gone by Adam F
At first I didn’t like this song that much, but when I saw the video I fell in love with it…
Tanzania and Kenya – Amantombazane by Shisaboy
My mental pictures when I hear this song are long bus rides, long bus rides, and long bus rides… all in Africa. The song doesn’t have a video, but at least you can listen to it. It reminds me so much of Africa, since it IS Africa.
Italy – Awkward by San Cisco
Can I say, they are too cute?!
Puerto Rico – Born to Die by Lana del Rey
Lana del Rey was another artist I avoided for a while, until I got to PR and started listening to the radio for the first time in over a year! And that’s when I got sucked into Lana’s world.
Italy – Someone Out of Town by Yuna
Just listen to the lyrics… enough said…
India – Dhoom Taana by Shreya Ghosal and Abhijeet
You can’t say you’ve been to India if you don’t get hooked on one of their Bollywood songs. This one is from the Bollywood movie, Om Shanti Om. And, can you not love a fun Bollywood video?
Thailand – Feel So Close by Calvin Harris
Picture this… it’s the end of the world, your on a beach bar on Phi Phi island, drunk, and dancing to this song… of course you will love it!
Macedonia – Scream and Shout by Will.i.am and Britney Spears
And another song that I avoided for a long time until I got stuck inside the hostel on a snowy day and watched TV for the first time since… I don’t know… the result? Sigh…
Do you have a soundtrack for your trips? Which songs remind you of which countries?
