Belize Snapshot: Black Orchid

Black Orchid in Belize

Black Orchid – Caves Branch in Cayo, Belize

The Black Orchid (Prosthechea Cochleata) is Belize’s national flower.  It is one of the few orchids that can bloom all year round.  While it is known as the Black Orchid, the reality is that this flower is never black, but a dark purple tone.

The Black Orchid is often found in many Maya archeological sites as well as many botanical gardens and landscapes throughout Belize.

This orchid is native to Central America, the West Indies, Colombia, Venezuela, and southern Florida.  The one pictured above is found in the botanical garden located at Ian Anderson’s Caves Branch.  In addition to the great collection of orchids, this botanical garden has an immense selection of flowers and plants native to Belize and Central America.

I was in a treehouse! They are really cool. Well, since I was by myself they weren’t romantic, but they could have been if I was in good company! ;)
