Big Rock Falls – Mountain Pine Ridge in Cayo, Belize
Big Rock Falls is one of those beautiful natural sites in Belize you don’t often hear about, but that are well worth mentioning and visiting. Deep in the Mountain Pine Ridge, Big Rock Falls is one of the many waterfalls you’ll find in the Cayo District of Belize.
My visit to Big Rock Falls was part of the trip to the Caracol Archeological Site, about 2 ½ hours away from San Ignacio, all on unpaved dirt roads.
Once you arrive at the waterfall site by car, or by horse or bike if you’re staying close, you have to journey down the steep natural trail on the escarpment.
About ten to fifteen minutes later, you’ll hear the sound of the Privassion River echoing through the valley, matched by the impressive sight of the water rushing down the 150 ft. drop of the Big Rock waterfall.
It is possible to climb the rocks up to 35 ft. high and dive in the cold pool sheltered by the immense boulders and to swim close and under the waterfall for a natural and powerful massage.
This is definitely one underrated sight in the Cayo District you should not miss.

Never heard of it, but sounds wonderful. Isn’t sitting under a waterfall the best?
It feels like a REALLY strong massage on your shoulders! sooo good!
So jealous! Belize has been near the top of my must-see list for over a decade now. Maybe in 2012…
Bret, 2012 is THE year to come to Belize! Don’t miss it!
What a waterfall! So powerful and yet so peaceful.
It is so relaxing and refreshing just to sit not he rocks next to the waterfall… so peaceful.
